Root canals

The toothache ended and the tooth saved — calmer than its reputation.

A root canal saves a tooth whose nerve has become infected or inflamed, usually announced by a deep ache, throbbing at night, or a sharp reaction to heat. We numb the tooth completely, clean out the infected tissue inside the roots, and then seal the canals so bacteria cannot get back in.

The procedure itself feels much like a long filling; the pain people fear is the toothache before it, not the treatment. Most root canals take one or two visits, and the tooth usually needs a crown afterward to protect it for the long run.
